When the boat comes in……or not!

The plan was for me to spend today with Richard and Claire, how bizarre you may think? But they are on a cruise and were due to arrive at Alesund this morning. I’d booked last night and tonight there so we could be together, that was until I received a message from Richard yesterday morning.

It came as no great surprise that Richard’s message said that the cruise ship could not now call at Alesund due to bad weather. Jacob and I were going to ride together to the Atlantic Road (wind and rain permitting) then go our separate ways, but with that news I cancelled Alesund and we stayed together to do the Trollstigen Pass, which was the next ‘must do’ on both our lists.

Although we had a very wet, and sometimes windy ride for most of the day, the ferry crossings we did were calm enough not to strap the bikes down. By the time we headed towards the foot of the Trollstigen the weather had picked up surprisingly and we could enjoy a mainly dry road ride over the pass.

Jacob was originally supposed to have done this trip with a friend from Scotland, when his friend cancelled at the last minute Jacob decided to do it alone, which included the North Cape, but also Kirkenes by the Russian border. He did those places and since our chance meeting at the Arctic Circle we have ridden together. We’re following the same route, as most other bikers seem to be doing, so may stay together until we leave Norway.

  1. Wow that road looks amazing and the view from the viewing platform l am lost for words. Which if you know me doesn’t happen very often. Brilliant photos as well the scenery, roads, bridges and tunnels must be awesome to ride them. Enjoy.

  2. Wow! Norway is such a beautiful country. Enjoy the trip regardless of the weather, and so pleased you have a riding companion.

  3. What a shame you couldn’t meet up with Richard and Claire…
I bet you enjoyed that ride despite the weather, it looks amazing.

  4. Sorry Brian, had been so looking forward to meeting up with you, we’ve been diverted to Kirkwall in Orkney due to the weather in Norway. Safe riding

  5. I don’t think the kind of fishy they serve in Norway will fit in a little dishy ( whale stew 🤢)!

Sorry your plans to meet Richard and Claire haven’t worked out. The inclement weather does at least produce some spectacular waterfalls and mood scenery. I’m glad Jacob is heading your way and you don’t have to travel alone.

Fingers crossed Richard and Claire do get to Iceland it’s s fascinating place to visit x

  6. Love the view of that bridge – looks like you will fall off the top – disappointing not to see your friends but at least you still have Jacob as your riding companion. Bring on the sunshine 🌞x

  7. Hi Brian
Such a pity you couldn’t meet up with Richard and Claire. It does look pretty wet where you are. It’s boiling here!
