Seeing the light

During my final years in the police I must admit that shift work, particularly nightshift, was starting to take its toll. That was at 50 years of age, so now, approaching 66, it shouldn’t come as any surprise that my midnight sun shift arrangement has taken some coping with.

But finally I feel recovered from my night owl exploits and rather feeble fell walk, and feeling refreshed I reassess my situation.

With the weather changing to what is more typical for the region, (ten degrees less, sunny intervals and showers) I thought the timing was probably right to leave the Lofoten Islands, even if it is with some regret. The primary reason for this ‘Artic Circle and Beyond?’ trip was the midnight sun, and when I leave these islands it’ll just be a day’s ride for me to lose the light. When Rachel and I came here back in 2015 we only stayed two nights, I have stayed two nights, but tonight will be the third. Circumstances, and my desire to stay here have changed what loosely resembles a plan.

As I ponder where I am, and where I will be over the coming days and weeks, then this will, like everything else, be yet again confined to the memory. It’s such a lovely memory to have created, but for now I’m going to ‘live it’ that little bit longer.

It may be pronounced ‘rain’ but it’s not……….yet!
Note the times and lack of ‘sunset’ and ‘sunrise’ obviously!

Yesterday evening I had, what I thought was going to be, my farewell tootle to the historic fishing village of Nusfjord, just a 15 minute ride around the corner.

  1. It is so breathtakingly beautiful, no wonder you want to start that bit longer. Make sure you and Reg get plenty rest though – it must be strange with all that daylight x

  2. It must be very hard to leave such a stunning place, I don’t blame you for staying a little longer x

  3. Your Police reports must have been a fantastic read.

Try the Lute-fiske before you head back. It’s deeee-licious!

  4. Stunning photos, Bri. You’re having more sunshine at midnight than we’re having at mid-day. Please bring some back to Cumbria, it’s like winter here 😕x
